FROM REFUGEE TO NEIGHBOR
With the "From refugee to neighbor" project, we created a platform for critical reflection and creative expression of refugee women and asylum seekers. Our main goal was to offer women the opportunity to actively co-design or they independently shape their media, public and social image and, in this process, develop competences in areas that are most exposed to manipulation by the media, policy makers and, consequently, the general public. As part of the project, we conducted a set of trainings, through which the participants developed knowledge and competences in the areas of active social inclusion, creativity, storytelling, cultural management, production of video contributions and creation of e-materials (content and design of the website). In doing so, we always emphasized the role of establishing contacts and connecting with the widest possible circle of stakeholders and created an environment that enabled refugee women and asylum seekers to develop diverse social networks and through them realize their potential and open up new opportunities for a quality life. In this way, the project contributed to a better knowledge of refugee women and strengthened refugee integration, while at the same time promoting their cultural contribution, potential and creativity among other citizens and institutions. With this type of activity, we have helped to contribute to a more active participation in society, which, among other things, also strengthens gender equality in the immediate family circle. Refugee women were given the opportunity to present their knowledge, skills, perspectives, stories and realities to the public in a way that encourages (self) reflection and empathy. In this process, they became active members of the new social environment. The project therefore promotes equal opportunities, gender equality, emphasizes the importance of social inclusion and interpersonal solidarity, and above all strives to eliminate the social marginalization of refugee women, who are too often presented as passive victims in stereotypical portrayals.
The project is co-financed from the 'Equality of Women and Men' program of the Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. More about the project at: http://drustvoterravera.wixsite.com/odbegunkedososede
